SYMPHONY ENTRY Symphony, I believe, is the least solid next to Meaning and most idealistic, next to Meaning. It is the concept of connecting two different things into one and selling that new object. During the discussion of Symphony, a girl brings up the idea of Symphony in cell phones; which is quite interesting actually. Since cellular phones usually or can include any of the following combinations of calling, camera, internet access, Bluetooth capabilities, music storage, and texting. My history teacher even mentioned that it is now nearly impossible to find a standard cell phone with only calling capabilities. Symphony is also the ability to recognize facial expressions and the meanings behind them. For example, being able to recognize when a smile in genuine or forced. Daniel Pink shows us pictures of himself forcing a smile and a real smile and asks us to determine which is which. With my under-developed right brain, I cannot tell which is genuine.
I am asked to relate Symphony to math in this entry. Here is the standard answer: a set of numbers can be seen as a whole and a particular math problem can be solved holistically by seeing different ways to solve a problem. Here's my answer: it's not. Math is a series of steps used to achieve an objective answer. The second math is made into a right brained activity; the world has lost its sense. As I said time and time again during the blog (during which I lost my "tact") math should remain a traditional subject. We should not try to fix something that isn't broken and we should not try to change something that could not get any better. I am not even a math person and I still see the value of traditional math. It is also my lowest grade, but I would never want to see it changed so that I could get a better grade in math or so that my "self esteem" could be enhanced.
